Jabulani

About The Ball

Jabulani - meaning 'to Celebrate' in the isiZulu language - is the name of the new ball for the FIFA World Cup 2010™.
Made, as ever, by Adidas - the world's leading Football equipment manufacturer, the Jabulani ball builds on their years of scientific excellence. With their history of official FIFA World Cup balls (from Telstar to Teamgeist™) the balls have improved year on year, though not without attracting some controversy along the way.
Regular balls are made with 32 hexagonal panels. The Teamgeist for World Cup in Germany 2006 had only 14 panels. The Jabilani ball has an amazing 8 panels.
Goalies will be happy with the 'grip n groove' texturing, which is also to aid smooth flight (think golfballs).
It is a heavy ball, and has bonded 3d panels - moulded spherically to retain shape and create a seamless spehere.
The number 11 carries heavy symbolism - the tribes of South Africa, the players in a football team. In honour ofthis, there are 11 colours used on the ball.

Construction

8 bonded 3d moulded Polyurethane panels make for a near-waterproof 'roundest ever' ball.

This table shows that the moulding technique means the ball retains its shape, and the lack of seaming means there is essentially zero water retention, which will reduce sluggishness of the ball if South Africa defies the odds and rains throughout the World Cup
The weight is interesting - being towards the higher end of the allowed scale means the flight will be truer and more predictable making keepers happy, but also rewarding accuracy for strikers.

"Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" in English, and "Waka Waka (Esto es África)" in Spanish, is a song by Shakira featuring. The song will be performed by Shakira and South African group , at the Closing Ceremony before the World Cup Final on July 11 in Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. The song is officially available for download through digital retailers the week of May 11. It also will be included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album to be released the week of May 31 by Sony Music Entertainment. The Spanish version is as well available in selected markets.
"Waka Waka" received mixed critical reception. The song is charted in a number of countries, number one in Italy and Spain, number two in Switzerland, and top ten in several European countries.

Background

The song was officially chosen as the anthem of FIFA World Cup 2010. About this Shakira said "I am honored that 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)' was chosen to be part of the excitement and the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The FIFA World Cup is a miracle of global excitement, connecting every country, race, religion and condition around a single passion. It represents an event that has the power to unite and integrate, and that’s what this song is about." Shakira continued, "African music is so inspiring and is poised to take its place on the global pop culture stage. I was proud to be able to work with one of South Africa’s most acclaimed groups, Freshlyground. Through “20 Centers for 2010” and 1GOAL, FIFA and its partners have committed to creating a lasting legacy of education for all – an issue that has been close to my heart for many years,"
About the collaboration, Zolani Mahola of Freshly ground said that "We are thrilled to have collaborated with Shakira on 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)', especially as we feel that the song captures the spirit and energy of the African World Cup. We are certain the song will inspire people around the world to celebrate the gathering of nations at the place where it all started. Here in Africa!"

Original song

The song was originally by a Cameroon band called Zangalewa. It appears Shakira reinterpreted the song without permission of the band, and after legal intervention by the band, an undisclosed deal was struck with Sony.
